This is a series of shots of my first digital painting attempt as it progressed.
This is my first attempt at digital painting (it is from reference), so feedback would be much appreciated. I struggled with the hair a lot, as you can probably tell.
The final (I couldn't take any more) version is here.
You know what? I actually like the hair the way it is right now. It suits the painterly textures of the face very well.
Be careful when using the Smudge tool to do the hair - I know this is early days so probably not a problem. It can create overlapping strands that seem to go through each other rather than lying above or below.
I favour a layering technique. Starting with either dominant light or dark shades and then working to the other end of the spectrum. It's time consuming yes, but the final effect can be very realistic.
Of course this is all coming from someone who was entirely self-taught when it comes to painting digitally so you may well find far more efficient ways of doing it.
Wow, I feel really privileged that you came across to look at this!
I have started a layering technique on my 'newer' version of the hair (not uploaded it yet). The newer version I am much happier with so far, building it up and not scribbling (like how I started).
It is really interesting to read about how other people approach these things. I had a good look through your tutorials too.
In case you want to have a look when it is finished, I'll send you a note.
